Project Based Learning

Project based learning, as well as other similar styles of learning such as problem based learning, inquiry based learning, and authentic learning tasks, tend to be bigger projects where students engage in multiple skills and steps to accomplish a goal. These tasks allow gifted students to use their strengths to complete the task or work on the project.

Independent Research Projects:

Students may self- select or be given a topic to research. Teachers can determine exactly what guidelines and expectations they have for such projects based on students' needs.

1.

Science Fair:

Participating in a school's science fair is not a groundbreaking idea, nor something that is limited to just gifted students. However, science fair projects give gifted students the chance to work on an extended project and explore a new concept as they learn. Students' creativity and original ideas can be expressed through their research and presentation.

2.

Mock Trial:

Having a class mock trial or other real-world simulation activity can give students the chance to engage in an activity that brings together the content they've been learning as well as find real world applications. Gifted students may really appreciate this kind of task because they can make the connections between the simulation and real experiences. Consider allowing gifted students the opportunity to plan or organize the mock trial.

3.

Classroom Management Tip:
Consider the groups you choose for gifted students during projects. Gifted students are sometimes not the best group workers, but can be taught how to be a respectful and valuable group member.
